I use a multimeter. I have one of those analog meters from meritline. Very very useful to show that something is dead; otherwise, useless to indicate the amount of juice left.

I tried in couple of costco in NJ area both are out with AAA batteries . I picked up one pack of AA battery and they also have the Sanyo charger for $ 6 + Tax ( Selling in amazon for 10$ to 12$ )

Costco employees can be lazy too, but not as bad as Walmart's. I found Target has the best employees. They will tried their best to find the stuff you wanted.
