Granted, you can't uninstall them, but you can disable them at least on Android 4.0+. You won't recover the storage space it used, but you can stop the app from calling home or enabling any annoying...

Except there is no way to uninstall all of the carrier bloatware without rooting. There should be a way to get rid of carrier apps that aren't needed.

Rooted and custom room are different, he most likely just has a stock rom/ recovery. so factory wiping will reset root. Not that its that hard to reroot.

Aside from being a glorified wifi toy, or flashing to Cricket, I'm not sure why people are even interested in stealing/keeping Verizon phones.

Since you are rooted, a factory reset can be handled by wiping the phone and reloading the ROM from Recovery menu's. It is really very easy to do and you won't lose your root.
