This is already a very cheap price, especially for a 17" notebook with 1600x900 resolution.
You might be able to find some almost simliar prices on eBay.

Yes. It would probably be overkill for that usage.
I'd recommend you go for a lighter/smaller laptop, unless you don't care about the weight.
