I just take cap off and use a super siphon, never spill a drop. You can still find the old-school ones at garage sales if you look hard enough.

I tried that type in a five gallon model; ripped the spout right off!
Place spout in fuel filler neck, hold can, get tired, rest can on neck, spout breaks, gasoline everywhere!
