I am sure I will do as you suggested pretty often in the future now that I jumped into the L domain, way too expensive than I thought, and used ones are way better solutions.

I've used this on a crop (T4i) and can confirm that it's an excellent lens. This and the EF-S 17-55mm for Canon give super sharp and rich pictures on Canon crops.
