I got on with customer support. I must have accidentally pressed Fn+F9, which switches off the track pad... and is right next to volume.

Sounds like something you need to get an RMA for, the only known bug that I know of is the smart gestures will stop working after a while until you restart the laptop.

Personally, I think this is a pretty crappy product. The touchpad was a pain for dragging anything/navigating (and I use a touchpad exclusively on my laptop at work) and the power button is way too...
