Well that was the point of my post. Updating your software should not cause it to lock.
The likely case is that after an OTA/update, the phone checks to see if there is a profile or PRL update....

For what it's worth. I have updated two Sprint pre-paid Moto Es without being locked out today. Just to be on the safe side, I blocked com.sprint.dsa as you suggested.

Another reason to root your phone, install custom ROM and not worry about this.
