Amazon has some decent ha guides. communication guide Zwave has the advantage of being a managed standard. Zigbee is super open but with no compliance enforcement almost nothing interoperates....

No, the harmony home hub only controls AV devices (TVs, cable boxes, game systems, etc). You can integrate the harmony home hub to work with the Smartthings hub however.

I have the ecobee3 which connects with both echo and smartthings with no issue. I use Cree connected bulbs mostly.
