Not really disagreeing with you as I have used taps and dies to fix threads also. But those are meant to cut whereas these are meant to move/realign/clean threads. But again, yes real world a tap...

Tap and die sets works just as well as re threaders, I just don't see the purpose in having two sets to do what one can. Seems more like a sales ploy to me since high grade bolts work just as well...

Not really limited, they have their purpose and they do it. Yes, they aren't taps and dies but they aren't meant to be.

Had this been an actually tap and die I'd be all over this, thread chasers are limited and can't make new threads, guess you could bevel and notch them but then there'd be no warranty.

I don't have this harbor freight kit but I think most of their metallurgy is questionable at best especially when you are dealing with high strength steel. Grade eight minimum for anything that...

The size is metric 12mm - 1.25 and is in this kit. Was thinking a cheap HF kit also, but don't want to make it worse with a snapped tap/die. I tried a snap-on right angle pick (the pick flexed...

I understand that these are for rethreading and retapping, not for new, but is that because of the hardness of the steel they are cut from or do they have slightly different thread pitch, etc?

Possibly. Hard to say for sure as it depends upon the size of the sliver. These are made more to straighten threads and get crud out. Also make sure your bolt size is included in the set :) You...

I snapped a bolt putting on a hitch. I've managed to drill out all of it except a sliver. Would this work in getting it out if I match the current thread?

I picked this up earlier in the year. Great quality tool that gets used far more than my snap on tap and die sets. One complaint: National thread starts at 1/4" and metric at 6mm. I still end...

The name of this product is incorrect. It is not a " Tap and Die Set" that can be used to cut new threads. It is a rethreading kit that can be used to fix existing threads. This is still a great...

i'm showing $17.16 back in points also. I've been looking for a set like this so I can clean up bolts/nuts without having to soak them for days in Vapo-Rust, degreaser/cleaners...

I have the 48 piece one and they've been really useful on an engine rebuild. Make sure to use cutting oil.
