You don't "lose all of your family pictures" when you backup, like you're supposed to. Something like family pictures should be backed up to multiple locations, with preferably at least one off-site.

Thank you all for the feedback, I am looking for archival purposes but for that exact reason I think reliability is important, I know there is no bullet proof HD and any brand or model can fail...

Really tempting OP but I am really afraid of Seagate drivers reputation of dying unexpectedly and reviews aren't that good either.
