That's more of a lens if you want to shoot things from far away. A more general purpose extended range would be the 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, but that's pretty pricey even for refurb if you're buying...

is the 17-55 f/2.8 any good at 600+tax? it's so cheap you might as well try. If not you can trade it in on amazon for almost the same price you paid for it.
