7950x (this) or 5950x (~$320) - which one is better value? This would be for an always on unraid home server.

What do you plan to do with the server? Seems overkill unless you needs tons of vms in parallel thst are crazy cpu hungry

Next gen cpu's expected to have large IPC increase and they're coming this year so might as well wait. X3d variants aren't expected til 2025 though.

Even with WiFi 7 I'd still rather be wired.

When WiFi 200 comes out I'd probably rather be wired.

This deal is for the X3D, I don't think you need that for a server.

The Ryzen 9000's will be coming out in 3Qtr of 2024 that will have IPC gains of 30-40% over the Current Ryzen. FYI, YMWV..

My current server is a 6 core i5 (8400). It's basically maxed out between ~30 docker containers (-arr stack, jellyfin, and more). I have 2 VMs and I'm trying to add a Mac OS VM, but the cpu basically taps out lol.

I'm realizing that this is the x3D part so probably would do ok with the regular flavor of it. I think I'll be patient here

You will be better served by an i5-13500 (14c/20t) and more ram / ssd cache drive honestly and save some cash / energy. Cheaper cpu and mobo. I think this is the sweet spot for a diy powerful home server. I can promise it wont tap out for a long time. It is probably alreasy overkill.
