How does this (or the other Wolfgang deal) compare to the updated guitarfetish SBS series? The SS265 and SS365 go for $309-359 and are getting really high ratings for the price point.

The various guitars from Guitar Fetish are pretty decent and are not junk. Because they are so affordable, it pays to get the best they offer. Every guitar in this price range may need some work - smoothing the fret edges, some set up, better strings, etc. That's true of the Wolfgangs too. The main difference I see is that Eddie arrived at the Wolfgang by incremental evolution. He preferred his Floyd Rose "decked" - all the way down to the guitar body so it would only dive (lower). The SBS has a rout so you'd have to make a block to do that. Eddie liked the pickups screwed directly to the wood. He was picky about his pickups too. With the EVH, you get those pickups. The volume and tone controls (high friction tone, low friction volume) on the Special are great. The Floyd Rose made in Germany is the best one, but the other ones are good. You'll probably end up having to replace the string retention pieces eventually and there's upgrades for that. Overall, the deal on the EVH is a screaming deal. Every single one. I'd love to get the whole set - the 78 Eruption, the Frankie, the 5150, etc. I have a Special and a Standard. Just get the Standard and add the D-Tuna, probably the best deal. Oh, and these are more versatile than you'd expect. Turn the volume down (it has a tone bleed) and it cleans up remarkably. The Wolfgang is a truly unique and remarkable instrument

Were any modifications needed to install the D-Tuna?

No modding is needed. The D-Tuna is super easy to install.
