How to Save at Southwest
Earn travel deals every week with email sign-up. Plus, you’ll get up to date information on the latest sales and discounts.
Sign up for Southwest Rapid Rewards and you could earn up to 60,00 points. This free rewards program allows you to earn points on every purchase you make and redeem them for free flights to more than 90 destinations. If you’re a casual flyer and thinking about whether Southwest points expire, know that you’ll need to make at least one Rapid Rewards transaction every 24 months to keep your account -- and your points -- valid.
Opt for a Southwest Rapid Rewards Visa card. You’ll earn two points for every dollar spent on Southwest purchases, plus bonus points on your anniversary. They also offer bonus points when you spend a certain amount in the first three months.
Get two checked bags for free. While most airlines charge for checked baggage these days, Southwest will allow two bags without a charge. If you’re wondering what the Southwest carry-on rules are, they’re about the same as most other airlines. You’ll get one carry-on bag plus one personal item, like a purse or briefcase. Carry-on bags must be less than 10 x 16 x 24 inches.
Opt for Wanna Get Away fares. What is a Southwest Wanna Get Away fare you might ask? These are some of the lowest-price fares offered by the airline. Aimed at casual travelers, they are non-refundable, but you can apply the cost to future Southwest flights if you decide to cancel.
Take advantage of Southwest sales, which include weekly sales to certain Southwest Airlines airports, as well as flash sales and seasonal sales.
Bundle and save with Southwest Vacation deals. These flight and hotel bundles (and sometimes even more) offer unique savings opportunities to some of the premier destinations throughout the U.S., the Caribbean and Mexico.
Buy EarlyBird Check-in if you’re concerned about Southwest seating. Since there are no assigned seats on Southwest, checking in just a few minutes late could mean you end up in the middle seat and with no overhead bins for your luggage. For $15, you can check in early to ensure a better seat and more room for your bags.
Where Does Southwest Fly?
Southwest now flies to 101 destinations, including to the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America. As of June 2017, you won’t find Southwest flights to Hawaii, but they are working on expanding their service and have announced plans that may include Hawaii and more international cities, as well.
Southwest Business Credit Card
The Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business credit card has many of the same perks as the regular Rapid Rewards credit card, but more. You’ll earn more points, there are no blackout dates and your points won’t expire as long as your account is open. There is a $99 annual fee, but frequent business travelers are sure to make up that cost in free flights.
