Before loading any OS's over your current one, check that your unit will qualify with said OS. Go through the online tradein tool

With 'other' OS being acceptable if you already have one of the listed brand computers, try installing a free version of Linux, like Lubuntu

If your brand is 'other', then it's harder to meet the minimum requirements and you might be better off trying to reinstall your original Windows OS.

Windows 8+ has your product key baked into the BIOS/registered in the cloud with microsoft. There is no check of a key for the download of windows 8+

For windows 7 you need the product key on the bottom of your laptop/behind your battery.

You should be restoring from recovery disks or from the hard disk partition. Refer to your owners manually but normally you can hit esc at startup and be given a list of boot options, sometimes one of the options is recovery. otherwise you can keep tapping F1 - F12 when starting the PC and hope it boots into the recovery partition.

Before wiping, in case you need to pull the Windows license that is on the current install (in case it's different from the sticker on the laptop or the sticker is smudged/faded/destroyed), use ProduKey
