Nice! I can't find it anywhere online: does this have an m.2 port? This machine seems ideal other than SSD instead of NVMe

I don't think so, and Acer is very strict about user mods, even simple stuff like memory upgrades and adding drives. Opening the case voids the warranty on most Acer desktops that I've seen.

Apparently all those issues can be avoided if you update the bios right after setting the computer up.

You should always check bios and drivers from all manufacturers (not just the brand of PC...dell/hp/acer). Also don't just apply the newer updates, read up how long they've been out and if they make any changes to features (laptop touchpad drivers are infamous for this but BIOS sometimes changes where features are)

It's a bit of a trade-off. I've had good luck with Acer laptops and the price was great, but I wish some of the components were higher quality, mostly the screens. I would never consider an Acer desktop because opening the case voids the warranty.
