Well you also have to factor in the cost of the case, DVD drive (if you care about that), and a windows license. All in all, you could get close to beating this price, but its definitely not a bad deal. Especially if someone doesn't want to mess with building a PC as it can be intimidating for first timers
Intel Optane can be helpful by:
-accelerating a SATA-connected disk, including SSDs.
-caching of data from disks for increased performance (where the greatest benefit is clearly spinning disks)
-caching of data from SSDs to reduce cell-wear from NAND-based SSD. The cell endurance of Optane is vastly superior to traditional NAND-based SSD.

If you intend to install your OS on an M.2 form-factor NVMe SSD, then you will not need Optane.
Why waste money on a cpu? Use that money to get a 6gb 1060 or better or amd equivalent

I got a new open box Acer desktop with an i5-7400 for $270. There are deals to be had, just keep looking.

Is it possible to build a machine like this, with good quality parts, for $750 retail?

At a glance...
i7-7700K $300
GTX 1050Ti $150
Mobo $100
SSD $100
16GB DDR4 Memory $100

So it makes sense to build it, right? The optane memory seems like a gimmick so dell can keep using regular hard drives. Sure it's probably great for web surfing moms, but gaming/video-editing is going to suck on it.

I was actually just looking at scratch and dent acers with the i5-7400 in it today for ~$300. Can you link me to the deal you got (even though I assume its expired).

How's that Intel Optane Memory? Have read some iffy things about it over on Amazon but have never used a machine that had it. Anyone with experience?

Also if anyone knows offhand, is that coupon code specific to this deal, or will it work on other systems?

Using your own numbers it would make sense to buy the Dell. You didn't include the OS, case, power supply or optical drive.

I agree the non-SSD isn't going to cut it but at least make a stronger argument than:
partial list of components for $750 > complete system for $750.

Yep. Add another $150. Plus half a day for installation, updates, and troubleshooting.

I believe it is i7-7700 no K, it might be cheaper but with the cost of OS/case/PSU, it might be similar cost. If you enjoy the fun of DIY, then DIY, if not, like me, I will not build it.

to be fair the Dell is going to need software updates as well.

It's interesting that one negative comment at the start of the thread received numerous replies defending the deal. Almost seems like a stirred up controversy to push the reply count.

Finally a decent configuration that's worth a sh*t, but the pre-rebate price is still a little high, and shame on Dell for not allowing configuration changes.
