Probably why they're so cheap. Remember when cell phones were free? That was before pre-paids and you had to have a contract. This is a little like that as I see it.

I sold cell phones part time for a couple months. We would have to say the service plan cost X and the monthly phone cost was Y so your total is Z. People were so confused because they thought the phones were free, when in reality that was a marketing ploy because they would change $80 to $100 a month and make the cost up. So many people would have a broken cell phone and say I want to buy an iPhone for $200 because that is what I paid for it. When in reality they paid $700. $20 to $30 a month is enough for a plan outside of unlimited for service if you buy your phone outright.

How can we opt out the plan? Request a refund for the plan after we get the phone?

I was referring to further back, like when Verizon (for example) would have free flip phones if you signed up for 2 years of service. Naturally, they were limited minutes plans for fairly high prices.

Since I got my first smart phone, I have bought them outright and used cheaper MVNOs. I currently use mintsim, which is under $14/month when purchased by the year. There are advantages and disadvantages to this system. The main advantage is price. The main disadvantage is if something goes wrong with the phone -- you have to hope you have a decent manufacturer backing you up, which is usually not the case. Nor do you have a store to bring it to. You also get less roaming with an MVNO

Too bad T-Mobile coverage is so poor in most areas I spend time. ^^ Simple is a T-Mobile MVNO.
