Deal site FatWallet will be shutting down

Hello, All.

I hope you are doing well.

Deal site FatWallet (FW) will soon be shutting down. On 09/20/2017, founder Tim Storm - who sold and left FW in 2011 - announced on his Facebook page that FW will be shutting down. I had written a thread then, but decided not to post it until the news became official. On 09/22/2017, an FW general manager confirmed the news; a timeline has yet to be announced.

I know many SD members either were FW members or are still concurrent FW members. Please feel free to share your thoughts regarding this news.

If anyone who just arrived from FW reads this, I'd like to welcome you to SD.

14 years ago, I joined SD on 09/13/2003, and several hours later, I joined FW on 09/14/2003. (I actually had an SD account that is years older than that, but I can no longer remember it.) Both FW and SD have been major parts of my life. I was actually much more active on FW until I jumped ship to SD in 2009.

Slickdeals rules note: FW is or was a major competitor to Slickdeals, so I'm not certain if this thread is allowed. However, I suppose if FW is shutting down, it doesn't really matter. A moderator may remove this thread if he or she sees it, of course. Thank you.

Take care,
Tofu Vic

Let's hope the REAL SDers emerge from the FW members. SD has the REAL grassroots base to outlast ANY competitor

FW had the absolute best mobile website ever. When they changed it I left. Despite numerous complaints from me and others about the change the would not budge on the horrible decision. They refused to listen to us and they drove themselves out of business. Companies need to listen to the consumer. I hope Slick Deals reads this thread and they keep the basic html site format. The only reason I originally came to slick deals was because of the mobile site format.

Although I started posting in both Slickdeals and FatWallet in 2003, I was mostly true to FatWallet until 2006, when FatWallet didn't listen to their community and caused a mass exodus. I did return to FatWallet, and it wasn't until ~2009 that I became a full-time Slickdeals member, posting on FatWallet semi-regularly. When they got bought out, I was done with them, although I still visited from time to time because I knew so many members and staff there.

Their biggest issues have been that they do not react to the community's opinions often enough, which is something I hope Slickdeals can learn from.

I was a big FW fan. Once urlhasbeenblocked took over, i found myself using it much less. The last few years I have only checked in around Black Friday. I was surprised to see it was gone.

I was always aware of slickdeals but since I was used to FW, I never really checked it out.

While sad FW is gone, I am now looking forward to becoming a sd contributor.

I started as an FW member around 2002, several years later I discovered SD and eventually shifted my allegiance to SD because I felt SD was more grassroots oriented than FW.

Sadly, SD seems to have become more commercialized -- maybe that's necessary in order to survive, but neither site seemed to retained it's non-commercialized / grassroots personalities that made them both so popular back in the early 2000s.

I thought that the FW Finance thread was very useful and had a lot of knowledgeable contributors who can provide thoughtful answers to many questions.

I started on FW. Used their CB which although low compared to just CB sites it was very well operated. They would actually help you if a CB didn't register. When they got rid of it I visited less and less. RIP FW.

I also started out over 10 years ago on FW Hot Deals, and FW Cashback, then almost daily read their FW Finance because there were lots of useful information over there. But moved to SD cuz there are lot more active posters and front-page deals over here, so never went back to FW since most of the deals are posted here first. RIP FW.

I just heard the news about FW. A friend turned me on to FW and it eventually led me to SD. I know they were a competitor of SD but as a deal seeker it was nice to have options
