Been looking for a flight from Austin to Sao Paolo for Feb 8-18. However, prices are as normal, not sure where you're getting 700s from, $863 RT for me.

Not sure why anyone would want to go there.
I wouldn't go to Rio it's really bad there at the moment. But São Paulo isn't bad. I just got back last weekend

Just don't go. I bet there are so many very nice places and things to do. Rio can be dangerous in certain places and times as any other BIG city but it has a bunch of things to do, see and eat

Avoid Rio: High crime area and very tourist-centric. Sao Paulo is a better bet for great food and nightlife, if you can live without the beach.

Don't fly United Airlines. Just got back from a trip where United rebooked me for an earlier flight without telling me. The website I booked them from got me a flight back the next day but United told the website I bought the flight from that I had missed my flight. Paid an extra $150 for a last min hotel and food.

United had contacted me before for late flights but I guess if they overbook or something you are on your own (but they will keep your money).

That's not exclusive to United. AA has done to me before as well...

Better yet, fly into São Paulo then fly on Azul or Tam to either the northeast or far south of Brazil. Fortaleza in the north for beaches. Perhaps iguazu falls or curichiba in the south. Sao Paulo is like the New York of Brazil. It is not very pretty but there is a lot of restaurants and shopping. Rio is usually quite nice but there are probably better times to go there than now.

Iguazu falls (or Iguaçu falls) are simply amazing. So many things to do. It's on the border with Argentina and Paraguay, so you can visit three countries in a single trip!heartheartheart
Avoid Rio de Janeiro and you are safe.

ps: brazilian here
