Requires 3 D cells. Alkaline cells are recommended.
You can try using it with cheap zinc-carbon/HeavyDuty Sunbeam batteries (3pk) sold at Dollar store for $1, but it'll only last less than a month.
Using AA to D spacers with rechargable AA will also not last long because NiMH AA batteries typically have 2000-3000 mAh capacity while an Alkaline D cell has 12000-18000 mAh.
If the lights start turning on and off by itself, it means the battery is low.
