Toshiba X300 5TB Performance Desktop and Gaming Hard Drive 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drive Retail Packaging HDWE150XZSTA

Good deal for a large internal hard drive. I typically rip large drives out from external enclosures to get a good deal. But this one's tempting for a true internal performance hard drive with a large capacity.
  • Designed for use in professional and gaming desktop computers
  • High capacity for storing game libraries and large multimedia files
  • 7200 RPM and 128MB cache for improved game play and quick access to large files
  • Built-in data protection technologies for enhanced drive reliability
  • Great for PC gaming, photo/video editing, and graphics design
  • Includes 2-year limited warranty

I don't like the 2 year warranty. They should be doing 3 yrs minimum but the hay days have passed. If you are using this for just storage where performance does not matter its not so slick but if you use it for say holding video files you will edit later its a good deal.

Personally for non performance needs I would want to try and hit the $20 a tb and try to go for a 6tb in this price range. I know that does not exist i am just saying thats my expectation at this point where performance does not matter (as long as its not crippling slow like under 80MB's write or something). Any of these odd size drives (1.5tb, 3tb, 5tb) always seem to have poor longevity. I am not talking just blackboard reports, the reviews are just more full of upset people in general and they have a bad rep. Just makes me feel these sizes are running different sized platters inside causing the problem. As in this one could be two 2tb platters and a single 1tb.

If I was still heavily editing video i would probably buy at least two of these in a heart beat. They would die before two years under heavy use or prove they are reliable and not worry me.

Hard drive warranties are mostly crap anyway. In the event that you need to claim it, they will just send you a refurbished drive, that's often not much better than the one you sent in. Plus you wasted $20 sending it to them, that could have been applied to something new.

Bought two of these drives recently. The first one developed 400 bad sectors within the first day. The 2nd one was recognized by the bios but would cause Ubuntu to hang on boot due to read errors on the super-blocks. For two supposedly new drives, I have zero confidence storing 5TB of data on them even in ZFS Raidz1000

I have two of these and find they're no more noisy than any other modern hard drive, like from HGST. But, I like to keep my homemade NAS cool so I can never hear the drives over the 120mm 1500rpm case fans anyway. Sorry, not much help.

You can get this drive for $115 with promo code:EMCBCCK63 (expires midnight PST)
