I dont much about the sound systems.. can i hookup the 5.1 system to the TV to get surround sound when i am streaming the movie from netflx? does it have 4k passthough/dolby / dts etc??
Samsung direct is $230, so not much of a deal. Fyi, this is a very limited setup with only one stereo rca audio input and that's it. No hdmi inputs. Also, the bluray player and amplifier are one unit, so if one or the other function stops working the whole thing is worthless. And you're SOL if you decide you want to upgrade to 4k blurays down the line. Every component in this thing is non-standard custom stuff, so none of it is upgradable or replaceable.
All that said, it's a low entry price to the 5.1 game if you never plan on upgrading or adding other A/V components.

This doesn't support 4k at all, nor any inputs for cable boxes, game systems, fire tv, etc. It has apps built in, so if those apps support 5.1 that would work. Any devices hooked up directly to your TV wouldn't be able to interact with these speakers- you would still need to use the TV speakers for those.
If you shop around, for about $450 you can get a basic home theater receiver and a decent set of speakers, which would give you a lot more inputs, power, versatility, and upgradability.

It has an HDMI input and an optical input.
Meaning you will plug in those devices into the TV and have the TV pass it to the receiver. Or just have the cable box plugged in directly into the receiver.

Which is more than double the cost of this system.

According to amazon, it doesn't have an hdmi input, only the output (unless this is a newer version than what they have listed).
But you're right about the optical input, assuming the tv supports sound output over optical you could send audio back to the amplifier from that. (although some tvs only output stereo, not surround, thru optical).

We use some older Samsung Blu-ray theater in a box units and (on those) you can input sound via optical in or ARC via the HDMI OUTPUT cable (its 2 way with Audio Return Channel) for sound. So IF they still have this functionality you can stream the TV apps and output the sound through the HTIB surround sound. I leave that for u to look up.
This is just bad timing for us, I would love to look into this for a back up for when one of our unit fails. I like to stock pile these for replacements in case of failures and for bedrooms. Plus with Samsung removing 3D playback from their players too, this becomes more interesting to me...
There are some issues with the older units WE have not doing dual output audio at the same time [TV + HTIB] but some modern LG TVs maybe others now allow dual sound output (TV speakers + ARC/optical) options in the TV settings. This can be important for non-tech savvy people that cant figure out all the steps to using the HTIB or when u just need basic TV sound like for news etc. Then u don't need to always use the HTIB or can dual purpose like watching news quiet TV sound with Radio/CD/audio of another type playing... etc. etc. etc.
P.S. You can do 4K UHD into a HDCP 2.2/HDMI 2.0 TV HDMI port for 4K eye candy, and then assuming the TV has optical/or ARC, get the sound out through these HTIBs.
Main problem is some TVs dont or can't do ARC above 2.0 or 2.1 (that may be an older problem). On out Samsung HTIBs WE can't tell what optical or ARC are actually outputting to and through the HTIB... Unlike say a better AVR that tells u what u are getting from the source. Small problems though, but we are getting at least 5.1. through our set ups unless it is an old 2.0 audio track only DVD or Blu-ray.
If anyone sees something about 8% Ebay Cash or a coupon that stacks with this please quote me if it applies I'll rep the first one.
This looks like Samsung has pretty much across the board dropped the price to ~$229 so some stores with Cashback could get a better deal (warranty etc.) as it stands right now.
How ridiculous is it that Samsung doesn't show a picture of the back panel. Should be a skip just for that CRAP!!
Shouldn't have to rely on Crutchfield to do their work for them.
But if you want to see the back panel: https://www.crutchfield.com/S-Pgt...5500W.html
for the sound bar its a little cheaper on amazon if you buy it through Vanns
But if you use ebay cards from samsung pay which are 10% off, you can get the sound bar plus $15 in ebay giftcards.

My friend has this system and it sounds as good as a 2k Bose package. No, it doesn't support 4K, but you can plug a 4K player into the inputs. You can also plu your cable box in meaning you have complete surround sound.
My buddy had a 3D YV, but no 3D player, so this was a good fit. He opted to use VUDU for 4K as they put 4K titles on sale often. Last week, 4K titles were 9.99 with some as low as 7.99. Why pay extra for a disc?
You can poo poo on this package if you like, but I'm buying one for my brother. It's a great unit and great gift. I'm an Audio Engineer and have a Samsung 7.2 system in my home.
You can spend more, but why? This boxed unit delivers all the sound you need. My only real complaint is the remote for this unit is awful and the app store is often offline.
I have a Samsung 4K player and it's the same remote and app store. I would not recommend the Samsung 4K players. Go with LG or Sony.
