2:00pm PST 11/24 - I was just able to order this from my phone. I came to my computer to post a new thread but when I checked from my browser it shows as Out of Stock. Not sure what happened but you may want to keep checking through the weekend on this one.

They measure the temperature of the room that they are used in. This allows the ecobee to use the temperatures for adjust the temp settings if your want. We use our bedroom and our daughter's bedroom temps to provide feedback to the main ecobee unit for the temp settings get at night since there is a temp differential on the first and second floor of our house. They also sense motion in the room.
FWIW: Just installed mine using that method.
