An iOS software update released in December 2017 will allow iPhone customers to use wi-fi calling.
Update iOS to 11.2 first so it can get carrier settings
clicked Settings>General>About, immediatly got a pop-up that a Cricket update was available. Entered in 911 address, then reset, and works perfectly.

for existing customers, this should be doable.
1. buy a tmobile prepaid starter sim for $10.
2. use the starter sim number to satisfy the transfer to buy phone for $99.99 + $25 plan.
3. don't renew the new cricket account, use the phone with existing cricket service account/plan.
total should be $135 and can unlock after 6 months.
