HP Elite X3 Laptop Dock (Lapdock) with Miracast $139

Stumbled upon this great deal. Unsure if it will work with Dex or a rasperry Pi. Confirmed that this works over Miracast; tested with a Dell Laptop. Should work with other Miracast compatible devices. Retail for this was $600.

This was meant to pair with the Elite X3 phone, but given that Windows Phone is now dead looks like prices are dropping; it's the Motorola Atrix Lapdock story all over again.

Tinkering is likely needed to get this to work with anything, so probably shouldnt buy this unless you feel comfortable about doing that. Posts seem to suggest it's fully USB-C spec compliant which means that it could work as an external display with a USB-C to Displayport connector.

Looks like he has ~260 units, about 180 sold already.

Be cautious of other low reputation / new sellers having this same item for a very low price; people are getting burned. This seller (bluefish-worx) is legit.

This is an accessory to the HP x3 phone, it looks like a laptop but it doesn't have a CPU nor a RAM

I bought from the seller at about $150. All is good.

No HDMI.

Uses either miracast or displayport alternate mode over USB type c.

Firmware can only be updated with that hp phone.

Stock firmware on this yields these results with my note 8:
Wired displayport alternate mode over USB typec succeeds, but the display is letter boxed and not very crisp, fonts look readable but ugly.
Trackpad works as mouse pointer.
Keyboard works.
Miracast didnt work with note 2, 4, or 8.

Went to Microsoft store and tested theirs; results are:
Cabled didn't work for display, keyboard, or trackpad.
Miracast worked partially...
Display was nice and crisp.
Keyboard worked.
Trackpad did not work.
Miracast dropped when cable was plugged back in.

Since I don't own the hp phone I didn't check the firmware of my lap dock nor the one in the Microsoft store. Might do that this week.

Read online Microsoft leaked hp follow up device plans and they'll have an android incarnation according to the rumor. This will tide me over until then, afraid to update the firmware and lose tethered functionality.

One correction, it does have an HDMI out, either mini or micro. Have no use case for that hence overlooked. No HDMI in.

I have a Note 8 as well. Are you on the Oreo beta? Apparently you're able to get a Dex launch solution with the Orea beta on Note 8; hopefully they'll keep that enabled for the real Oreo launch as well.

This seems like a better Superbook. I wonder if I could use my Android device to mirror. One guy said that the Samsung S8 should mirror to this, which is what the Superbook does. Would rather have this today than wait for the Superbook to ship by March.

It's a little different. Superbook (which I'm also backing) has a Displaylink solution. This is native displayport over USB C.
