Trying to hit all the threads I visit with our latest family fun.

DH came down with something last Sunday...stayed away from the baby until Weds, when I fell ill with the same thing. DH ran a fever for about 4 days and has been run down for over a week. I ran a fever for 3 days and still feel exhausted. Poor lil J had glossy teary eyes on Friday and started to run a fever that got as high as 101.3. We call the after hours nurses hotline and they said he needed to be seen that night. We took him to the ER 2 blocks from our house as our insurance (Kaiser) contracts them after 7:30 pm when the nearest Kaiser Urgent Care closes. We get there and checked in at about 8 pm. They run a battery of tests on LJ including drawing blood (from his teeny little arm Crying2), urine sample (where they cath him Crying) and an influenza test (where they stick a syringe up his nose and push in a bit of saline and suck it back out Crying2). The influenza fast test came back Type A. So the doctor decided to admit him. Problem was, we had to be admitted to Kaiser so we wait for an admitting doc and for the Kaiser transport (ambulance without the sirens) to come pick us up. Transport gets there at about 1:30am. They strap LJ in his carseat to a gurney where is is hooked up to a monitor for his vitals. We get to the hospital in San Diego a little after 2. Settled in the room where the nurse and doc check him over and get him all hooked up to the vital monitors there. Hospital cribs look like cages Weeping I feed LJ at about 3:30am and he falls asleep in my arms. I call my mom at 4am and give her an update and totally lose it. Nurse walks in shortly after my call and comforts me and tells me to try to get some rest. I lie down in the chair that flips out to a bed and proceed to soak my pillow with more Weeping I think I fell asleep for maybe 30 minutes. LJ had a monitor on his big toe that glowed red. He was swaddled in the crib but his little feet kept moving up and down. I couldn't take my eyes off my baby's little glowing foot. It was tough having him across the room to sleep since we co-sleep/do the family bed thing. LJ was then up at about 5:30 to eat and he started to coo and smile at me, which was a big relief since he was acting more like his little self again. The wonderful thing is he broke his fever at some point in time before we got to Kaiser as every temp they took was normal. He hadn't been given any meds so his little body must have Flexed at the virus and said I am Strong get out of here! They did another influenza test at Kaiser...this one is the 5 day which is more accurate. The nurse did advise us that more than 90% of the fast tests that indicate type a come back from the 5 day as H1N1. They continue to monitor him and LJ was fine and actually back to his fussy butt self. Yeah I know, most kids get fussy when they're sick, mine is fussy when he's healthy and quiet and sleepy when he's sick. Doc checks in at about 5pm and said, he didn't see why we couldn't monitor LJ at home to see if the fever came back and if he started to get a cough/congestion, so he discharged us. That was the BEST news ever. All of LJ's vitals remained strong and he continued to nurse well and had good output with wet and dirty dipes.

I have never been so scared in my life. Thanks be to God that we are home and he has continued to be his fussy little normal self and no stuffiness or coughing has started.

So, yeah, chalk our family up to the H1N1 stats.

CM, you are a super strong woman with the testing and surgery Bella has had. hug I couldn't handle the swap that was stuck up my kids nose. Worthy

ladies, thoughts on pregnant women getting the new H1N1 vac ? We are so torn .... apparantly my wife's sister knows 2 people that have had the vac and 1 is now instantly autistic, the other has some form of retardation now .... I'm gonna verifiy these stories though ...

I woke up at 4 am last Saturday and stood in line and got my H1N1 vaccine. I didn't wanna risk it since my baby's gonna be born in 3 weeks at the height of all this mess, and she wouldn't be able to get the vaccine herself until she's 6 months.

My doctor also recommended it. So I got up early and got mine, and thousands of people in line behind me got turned away when they ran out. I could never forgive myself if something happened to the baby that I could have prevented.

any side effects ?

my understanding is this, preggo women have a decreased immune system...therefore their risk of pnemonia is higher ...apparantly, h1n1 loves to settle in the base of the lungs and cause severe pnemonia....resulting in death in a number of pregnant women ... another reason is due to increased lung capacity in pregnant women ...my wife's due date isn't until June 25th ...so it sounds like we need to look at plotting some charts :

Flu Season
The decline in a woman's immune system through the pregnancy
The decline in a woman's breathing capacity through the pregnancy

It may be that both of her "declines" are past flu season ...this could help in the decision

how's my logic ?

When I got my regular flu shot 3 weeks ago, I felt a little achey and feverish the next day.

I felt absolutely nothing after the H1N1. It was fantastic.

That was our issue. It was only available last weekend as the nasal mist. I guess this weekend the shot became available. No way, no how would I ever do the mist for any of the flu vaccine. That contains a live virus. We got sick anyway, a day late and a dollar short! I am pretty sure that 5 day test will come back H1N1. IMO any strain of influenza is the suck!

We're all sick here too... for now I think it's just a bad cold. I hope.

Maddy and I were at a church women's retreat all weekend. She did wonderful there, she was sooo good. Luckily the cold didn't really hit her until we were home yesterday. Last night and today, she has been so clingy and whiney. If she's not sleeping, she wants to be held or nursed constantly. I'm just on my way to take my shower finally.

I didn't even get a shower yesterday Sadwalk

You'll know if it is more than a cold by the fever that lasts for more than 2 days and you have the chills and body aches. Oh and you CANNOT get out of bed no matter how hard you try!

Get well soon!

Oh, I know it's not the flu. Not that bad at all. Just hoping it's only a cold and not a sinus infection. Do feel a little better today.
