For those more interested in deals that consider shipping into the pricing (I don't have a large enough vehicle) consider this other deal at best buy

Looked at these at my local Costco. They are absolute garbage in comparison to the Gladiator shelving (I own two of the Gladiator units and will be getting more).

I have both Costco/Whalen and Gladiator in my garage. I bought at Costco first, but needed more and got a great deal PMing at Lowe's to HD, back when you could get match + 10%.

Unless either company has changed the product significantly since I bought them (2-3 years ago), Costco gets my vote. But it's close, and neither is "absolute garbage". Both do exactly what they're made for: sitting there and holding a lot crap. I need another, so I'll be checking them out this week.

The one I looked at in store a couple weeks ago was a pile of crap. It seemed sturdy enough, but the finish was terrible, and just overall it wasn't nearly as well made as the Gladiator. I really wanted to like it too since it costs less, but I would rather hold out for another deal on the Gladiator shelving (got both of my large ones for $149 from Home Depot). Maybe the Costco display was just really beat up, but it was pretty bad and it completely turned me off to that one.

here's a review from costco online. seems like theyve been getting cheaper each model
I have been buying Whalen racks from Costco for years. They used to have a slick grey hammered finish that allowed the pieces to slide easily together without tools. When they first moved to a black finish it was not as nice, it scratched much easier than the grey, but at least the pieces still assembled easily with a rubber mallet. Now, the newest black powder coat is cheap and awful. Not only does it scratch and rust easily (the demo at the store showed rust) but the pieces stick together - the new model is far more difficult to assemble. The new cross braces also have tabs that protrude down to the top of the shelf space below and can catch on items being placed or removed from the rack.

The hammered grey from years ago assembled easily without a mallet. When Whalen first switched to black, I found a mallet made assembly easier. With the current black powder coat, a heavy rubber mallet is an absolute requirement and some pieces are still very difficult to fit. While I used to buy only Whalen shelves from Costco, now I would recommend similar options from other manufacturers that have a far better finish.

I wish Costco allowed reviewers to post pictures, the differences between the 3 finishes is very noticeable.
