Nah it's not the best the rt-ac86u is the best one it supports a fast cpu 1.8ghz dual core compared to 1.4ghz dual core on this rt-ac88u meaning it can get about 200mbps throughput over openvpn and the range is slightly better on the rt-ac86u only difference here u get is 8 lan ports vs 4 lan ports on the ac86u

This is probably my favorite Asus router. It is about the most powerful before you get up to the "Spider" looking ones that seem to get worse reviews overall. It is the same specs I believe as the AC-3100 but with more ports on the back. And it is a good certerpiece for AIMesh, if you are into that sort of thing.

Good point... lots of wired ports on the back of this one.

Have had this router for about a year. It's a mixed bag: stock firmware is reliable as hell, but it only has average features (aside from 8 gigabit ports). Merlin firmware unlocks a LOT of extra stuff (I'm using it as a simultaneous VPN client and server), but has long-established stability issues like 5GHz Wifi disappearing.

I just flashed a couple of tm-1900's to ac68u for aimesh. What's the range comparison between this and ac68u? I wish it had a proper wireless backhaul, but can't complain about such a dirt cheap mesh solution...

Anyone who has the 86u, should I keep the stock firmware or is it worth it upgrading to merlin? I was using merlin on my t-mobile asus 68u and it was great.

I flashed merlin on mine right out of the box. you may want to go with 382.1_2 for now. I've had a minor issue or two since updating to 384.3. I can't be sure my issues are the firmware though.

This better than the Linksys EA9300? I got that the other day for $200 too.

The range on the ac88u is insane. I was able to maintain my wifi connection as I walk my dog and 4 houses away.

I have this. I bought it over 2 years ago. I run the RMerlin firmware, and it's been fantastic. no issues, and never needed a reboot. I also really like the 8 ethernet LAN ports on the back.
While I highly recommend it, it's over 2 years old at this point. I'm surprised there's nothing better yet. If I had to buy now, I'd probably get the RT-AC86U. It's just come out and has better internals (and runs a much more modern Linux kernel behind the scenes).

Lol that's relative to how far the houses are apart and the size. Can I get that in distance in terms of bananas for reference. Thank you!
