Office Depot Recording Customer Drivers License and Home Address on pick up orders

I picked up some photo paper that I ordered for online pickup at office depot last weekend.
When I tried to pick it up they asked me for my license (which they are supposed to do) but they took it from me and scanned it.
When I asked what they were doing they told me it's the "new system" and I asked if my license is being recorded and they said I don't know and it's required.
I said I've had my identity stolen in the past and I do not want my info recorded in their system. My item was under $7. I had the id that matched their order with my face on it and it matched the name and address that I just shipped an item with.
No matter it's required I was told.
A week later I bought something else online for pick up and again a cheap item. This time I gave my old D.L. which didn't scan and they promptly pulled up a screen to manually enter the data.
On there they were typing in my Driver's License, Name, Address etc.
I objected again and again got the it's required.
Monday I am calling the California Attorney General to complain. I'm pretty sure that they can view the ID but are NOT allowed to record it.

How many people does this happen to before down the road we here OD was hacked and we can get a free credit report and then a class action settlement (same thing happened at Kmart and Burlington and they were only insisting on zip codes/email addresses, not physically scanning your DL before u know they were even going to do that)?
I fixed my problem. I buy from the store with lockers, scan in the code they give me and I'm on my way. They never touch or even see my DL.
A driver's license scan would "fix" that problem for the scammers. Absolutely outrageous.

Second time it happened I gave them my old license which expired in 2015 and it won't scan. That's how I found out WHAT is being recorded. They pulled up a screen and were typing in ALL my info, name, address and date of birth.
I don't want that in their system.
