Look carefully into the itinerary: "silk factory", "tea plantation" are 2 shopping stops where they sell items at 10x or 100x of fair market price.

There have been few incidents of threatening and use of force to get (mostly domestic) tourists to buy which is illegal in China. Although that's unlikely to happen to you, you need to be prepared to face high-pressure sales professionals: stories, "history", solicitation, special "discounts", etc. Also bring N95 mask due to smog.

Other than that, China is very cultural, friendly and safe. It's among the safest countries in the world by crime rate.

Have you done one of these tours before ? I would love to do this just to see the Great Wall but it seems like it's more geared to older adults. What do you think ?

I did a Europe tour with a Chinese American operator almost 30 years ago and it was fine. Mostly older folks but a few younger as well (we were just out of college).

This particular deal though seems almost too good to be true? I just bought 5 of these for the whole family, with Groupon's $50 off plus supposedly 10% back elsewhere. I chose departure date around spring break so $899-$50-$85 per person to include 3 flight segments LAXPEK, PEKPVG, PVGLAX, 8 nights stay in decent hotels, plus most meals included?? I know flights to China can be ~$500 RT but this still seem like an incredible value. Any other SD insights or advice?

Ha Ha Ha, Factor in your Chinese Visa cost. Yes go to Bejing when it is cold. Better bring your respirator. For accurate pollution reading check the US Embassy in Beijing. I just got back from Beijing in April 2018. For so few days you will spend a lot of time in traffic around Beijing. Our tour guide took us to the subway and got us back to hotel since it took over an hour to go approx. 3 to 4 city blocks.

As others have mentioned you will be gouged price wise in the markets the tour operators take you to. That is why they are smiling and so happy to see you. How many Chinese do you see in these markets buying items? That's right none. On the plus side there is great food from China that you will eat that will ruin you. The Chinese food you eat in the U.S. will taste like a frozen dinner after eating authentic, fresh, hand made noodles and food from China. Don't be afraid to try almost any food from a reputable restaurant as even if you don't know what you are eating it will taste great compared to US. Also the history and architecture is 2nd to none.

You better not be timid when crossing the street either. Just stick to your path and make small adjustments. Bikes, Electric Scooters, and other objects will be coming from all directions.
