First of all, you will need a CVS ExtraCare card. This is obtained easily at any store at the register. Some will ask you to fill out the form then and there, others will just give you the card and ask you to return the form later.
Once you have the card, you can now start CVSing
The biggest thing to understand is that CVS uses a promotional program called "ExtraCare Bucks" (commonly abbreviated as ECBs.) These print out on your receipt immediately once you purchase an item offering them; almost like an instant-rebate you get at the register. You can turn around and use them anytime on almost anything in the store, except for alcohol, cigarettes, and gift cards.
Often, CVS advertises items as "Free after ECB" – For example, throughout the month of November, CVS has Crest Pro Health Whitening Toothpaste in 4.2 oz size, for free after ECB. The cost is $3.49, but you get $3.49 back instantly on your receipt. The best part is that there are often coupons available that can actually help you earn money… like for the above toothpaste, there are $1 off coupons available, meaning the item would be $2.49, but you get $3.49 in ECBs back. The limit on this toothpaste for this month is 2. So if you wanted to start off small to get into CVSing, the thing to do would be to buy one toothpaste in the first transaction (and use a coupon if you have one, so that you either pay $3.49 or $2.49 in cash), then use the $3.49 ECBs you get back from that first transaction to pay for the second tube of toothpaste, and again, receive $3.49 more in ECBs.
The trick now is to roll your ECBs so that you rarely pay more than maybe a dollar or two in tax on transactions, instead using your ECBs from previous transactions… then earning more to keep doing the same. It's a cycle (and a game/addiction to some, lol.)

Stupid painting way too late then stupid choosing to drink wine to break the news to me that we can't afford a $3000 vacation even with free hotel.
My husband was going to be gone all day today...and I was FINALLY gonna have the whole house to myself almost all day while the kids were in school....and it's 40 degrees and raining and they freaking called off school. So I was excited all day yesterday to just have a nice relaxing day by myself and of COURSE freaking school was called off.
Stupid painting way too late then stupid choosing to drink wine to break the news to me that we can't afford a $3000 vacation even with free hotel.

He's right - but it was fun to dream about it for a bit. He did say that if fares drop considerably, we can go. So I'm scouting out fare sales... without a lot of hope. Come on $1 flight craziness!
For now, I'll be content with my gorgeous house (well, it will be by the end of next week) and my healthy family.
I hope Jenni gets power back today.
