I've put 250 hrs on this since release. Capcom keeps releasing free content. It is good at making the player feel a great sense of accomplishment because there are monsters that will absolutely wreck you when you first start to learn the game and as you become battle hardened and learned their behavior, it becomes much easier.
That happens alot in the early games as they get you acclimated. When you hit rank 49, the training wheels comes off and you'll have to fight something called Kirin, you'll need to learn it's move set and when to engage and when to dodge or you'll just get wreck if you try to Leroy Jenkins it. The combos are not difficult to pull off, the depth is thru customization of said weapon base on your play style.

I bought this game, played a few hours, and the battle system is beyond mundane. Am I doing something wrong? Just seems so repetitive and non intuitive. "hit the monster a lot, it'll run, hit again til it dies".

The appeal is the online portion, it's less mundane when doing it with a group of people. I played the wii u version and put a lot of hours into it, but never again. It's pretty repetitive.

This is practically an entirely different game from the Wii u monster hunters.

I really wanted to like this game, but I felt that it was just too repetitive. I put about 15 hours into it and I felt like I was forcing myself to play. The whole game felt that it was essentially -fight monsters, empty bags, make weapons to fight harder monsters -repeat again and again. The game is beautiful and I was okay with the fighting but I def needed more variety. This was my first Monster Hunter game though.

You're not alone. These games seem to create two sets of people. Some it just clicks for them and they are into it, some just never can enjoy it no matter hard they try. I've tried very hard to get into Monster Hunter in the past and I just plain old don't like it.

Thats pretty much the appeal of the series. That loop and the deeply satisfying hits, breaks and staggers you can get from the monsters. All weapons are easy to pick up but have a surprising amount of depth to them. If you don't enjoy it the basic loop and somehow expect more, eg. A better story, compelling characters, etc. You're in the wrong place though.
Games good only at what it does best and that is satisfying combat vs. awesome monsters.

And if you don't find the combat satisfying or enjoyable then this game isn't for me... I mean you either. Figurative you
