EDIT: For what it's worth, after ~10 minutes of researching the 3 different authors that wrote the 4 books in the list under $3, my choice ended up being "Ax" by Ed McBain [amazon.com].
I also found another random bestselling author's ebook that is currently free that popped up on a recommended link through Amazon after I bought the McBain book. The Dying Hour (Jason Wade) by Rick Mofina [amazon.com]
