However it's worth mentioning that a trip to Iceland requires booking well in advance.
Good luck finding something on the South coast for the given timeframe (try finding lodging near Vik for example). Unless you want to spend the whole trip near the capital.
Airfare is probably the least expensive item of a trip to Iceland. Lodging, car rental, and everything else is not. By the way, gas is $8 per gallon right now.

I take an Osprey Ozone backpack without an internal frame and bring little clothes so I can roll it up and lash it to meet personal item spec.
Then I buy my clothes upon arrival in Europe, and the $70+ I save will buy me plenty at the thrift store.
Do it! Think thrifty! Iceland rocks, Europe is delightful, and airfare has never been cheaper. Props!

We stayed in the Capital and traveled everywhere which was no issues. We also went to Vik and stayed the night once on a 2 day trip to Hofn.

Non-stop flight time from New York to Reykjavik is around 5 hours 45 minutes
How much more expensive would you say Iceland is compared to NYC?
