The VTF-2 MK5 is a beast. Have had it for a few months now and it is incredible. Definitely worth the money over the VTF-1 MK3 if you're considering HSU. Warranty on both is quite good too.

The 3.5 is at the very top of performance vs dollar ratio for ID subs. Sad part is HSU's sales aren't really sales..more like a small discount. Nevertheless nice find OP

Wouldn't touch hsu with free money. Guy puts crap caps in his amps and, when they blow up, he doesn't stand behind his product.

Mind if I copy and paste this comment into the AVSForum HSU thread? Would love to hear what owners, Dr. Hsu and his son have to say.

I am fine with that. I talked to the guy myself, I can probably dig up the emails where he pretty much told me to pound sand when the caps blew on my sub. I found out it was a common problem.

Here is one thread about it.

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/11...tions.html

Stuff amps with cheap trash knockoff caps, knowingly, and when they inevitably blow tell people to pay for new stuff, or throw the whole thing out.

I barely used the thing since I lived in apartments for several years. It blew up a year or less outside warranty. I had probably used it full out for a couple hours. He wasn't obligated to do anything because warranty but when you knowingly make a trash product and then stiff your customers while trying to be an id/word of mouth, you deserve the reputation.

Guy is a scam artist. I have had an svs since my hsu went out, run it hard, and have no problems.

WOW!

Thanks for the info!
With so many choices out there, it is hard to decide. I was leaning more towards SVS because of the 5yr warranty on the complete sub vs the 5 and 2 on HSU.

I am also considering JTR and PSA. I currently have a Mirage 15" sub that I am upgrading. I have had it for over 20 years and no problems.

I was also considering PSA 15" or two Rythmik LVX12 or two HSU 12".
And I have been reading recommendations on AVS forum and Audioholics about going with two identical small subs compared to 1 bigger sub, to get rid of dead zones. So, budgetwise (and value for price), two HSU VTF2-MK5 is the way to go for me now.

Any thoughts from experts?

JTR subs are absolutely phenomenal... I've had a Cap 1400 for about 2.5 years now, though that's probably overkill for most folks

That's the one I am looking at or the 2400.

FYI all...SVS rep said that Labor Day sale will begin Tuesday. Let's see what type of discounting is done. I am even open to their clearance deals, because they carry the same 5yr warranty (Driver and Amp).

I ran a SVS cylinder sub for several years and replaced it with a HSU VTF-3 which has been running strong for many years. The HSU in my listening environment has been noticeably superior, but that could always be partially due to room positioning which is different between them. I have a two friends that run HSU subs (we all bought at the same time on sale) and not one of us has had any issues. Based on my experience I would not hesitate to recommend HSU.

FWIW Hsu offers quality output for the $... but from the reading I've done on AVS through the years, there's a reason they offer an extended warranty on their electronics specifically, and a reason most folks suggest you get it.

Once you add that, and the shipping, their regular pricing isn't quite as great bang/buck wise as they seem initially compared to some of the other usual suspects

HSU actually runs sales quite often, just at minimal discounts. The VTF-2 mk5 is only $30 off normal price and that's what the sale price always is. They do not discount dual drives more than what they always cost. HSU's 15" subs are $40 off when they are on sale. The VTF-15H MK2 just came off sale that lasted about 2 months.

SVS sales are limited to their outlet. Rarely they will have new stock available at discounted prices. Example being when they run Thanksgiving sales on new stock PB12 and SB12.

That thread was about an older product that HSU no longer made, and therefore could not offer replacement parts for. A 2 year warranty on electronics and 7 on the woofer seems pretty generous in terms of electronics. I'm guessing that the price of a similarly powered SVS with it's free shipping and 5 year warranty is about the same or more than the HSUs when you add in shipping and an extended warranty.

Also, the amplifier sections are easily removable and replaceable on HSU subs, so saying that you have to "throw the whole thing out" doesn't seem quite accurate either.

I'm not contesting your assertion on the reliability of their capacitors, but I'm also not seeing enough evidence yet. I need to do more research. And even if they aren't as long lasting, in light of the above (performance/price with extended warranty), I'm not sure how much it matters.
