SkyTeam's China Eastern Airlines, a certified Skytrax-rated 3 out of 5 Stars much like our major US carriers, have round trip airfares travelling from New York City (JFK) to Phuket Thailand (HKT) for $439 - $514, making a stop in Shanghai China. The stopover is about 12 hours.
For travel availability, I did trial and error on dates and got as many as my time permitted. If you have a certain time-frame in mind to travel, try it. But here's what I got and since I did trial and error on these dates, these prices are verified and available as of right now.
For $439 round trip:
Departs JFK: March 3, 4, 8, 20
For $514 round trip:
Departs JFK: Feb 25, 26; March 6, 19, 21
Returns: Start by entering a 7-day stay and if that's not enough time, work your way up from there to 10 or 14 days.
If this helps, two dates I tested all the way on Skyscanner for $439 price were March 4-11 and March 3-13, a 7-day trip and a 10-day trip, respectively.
To book this, enter travel information on Skyscanner [skyscanner.com]. You will be given several different price options based on flight so select your flights and then book it. There are reasons most people go during the dead of Winter.
Damnit, you beat me to it! Lol
Is UA better?
I flew with China Eastern and at a low rate can recommend them. Be aware though that flights from Shanghai can get delayed (I was delayed four hours on an afternoon Shanghai-Osaka flight), so if that sounds like a miserable thing to experience then paying more to fly another carrier is something to look into.
The lowest fares often involve a long layover or night flights for the arrival to Thailand so that is something to keep in mind as well.
