This is the best one hands down. Plex, streaming and even playing games.
Nope..just picked this up for Plex and Kodi streaming alone. It's the best Plex client available. I've used my Xbox One up until now and a raspberry pi for Kodi. Now consolidating down the Shield for netflix, kodi, plex. Much less power draw than the Xbox as well, more on par with the Pi.
It's versatility and power on tap (computational) puts it above Roku, sticks, etc in my book.
I have a nice gaming rig w a 1080ti so I might explore the game streaming, but why short myself and not game on my ultrawide monitor at 120hz.
So I have one of these in the media room. As stated, you will not find a more robust and versatile streamer. Only a fully built HTPC beats these things out from a media box perspective. If you are on the Google Ecosystem, it is a no brainer. You have access to a lot of the apps you are used to on the Google Play store and can sideload unknown apps to make up for the rest. I'm not a fan of kodi but this things runs flawlessly for those builds.
I have a 4tb USB HD attached and it serves as my main Plex server for the low power consumption and I run Retroarch for emulation purposes to play 16 bit to Dreamcast titles on this baby. Loaded Crash Bandicoot last night for nostalgia purposes and it was buttery smooth.
Gamestream and Nvidia Now are both valid options for triple a titles if you have a strong home network. I often start a game in my office and finish it in our master bedroom before sleep utilizing the Shield TV or Portable.
If you are an Apple enthusiast...The Apple 4K tv has Dolby Vision which the Shield lacks, but you can't get the same gaming mileage or Plex server usage out of their box. For $119 buy now, think about it later.

Is there any other reason besides price to buy many of the other boxes I seen? If you were to recommend a cheaper one that also has a remote what would you pick?
For someone who intend to use this for no gaming things, streaming/ Plex is this an Overkill?
Current set up includes downloading torrent n casting them from desktop to TV. Netflix on fire stick.
Although I very not tried Kodi etc, that may have appeal to me.

Anyone asking about what device to buy, just get this. By far the best, and this is a great price. I have tried everything else, and this blows them all away.
If you plan on continuing current usage pattern, then yes, this would be an overkill. And, if you have your desktop turn on most of the times, then you can run plex on that machine.
I plan on getting this when the price is right since my desktop is only on for a day a week when I work from home. Not urgent. Just nice to have dedicated machine for streaming movie and music to many devices and users that's not a power drain and warms up the room, and one that my toddler won't keep resetting.

Thank you
What are you using for Plex server, I would imagine HDD attached to Shield?
