I'm having fun, I don't see where all the hate is coming from.
Is it different from other fallout games ? Not completely.
All the mechanics, gameplay, and graphics are there. Storytelling is what's different. The biggest complaint is there are no human npc characters.
You get quests by listening to distress calls, holo tapes, and robotic npcs.
This doesn't mean it won't change later. Those who have played the beta, voiced their opinion very strongly about this. Bethesda can add in the content and changes over time.
So what does it feel like in the multiplayer aspect of things ?
Destiny 2. There are public events, team based quests, and more similarities.
Can you play alone? Absolutely!!
But if you are a level 8, attempting to fight with a level 50 enemy, do you think it will go well?
This is where teamwork comes into play, and it's fun.
Example, I could choose to raid a building I just discovered, but I have no idea what's in there. There have been times where I had my butt handed to me, and times where I was able to stand my ground. You could always leave and run away, resupply, get stronger and go back.
Do you see the flexibility here? You can approach every situation any way you want. Nothing is forcing you to play with others. Even the public timed events can be fought alone or with other people. Same thing in Destiny 2, I've taken on an event alone quite a few times.
Anyways to the point, they made a good game here. It's odd to many people because of the multiplayer aspect.
I was super skeptical at first, but the beta allowed me to really change my view about it.

With the effort they put in the map and the narrative of letters, robots and terminal entries.. I disagree.
We'll see what direction it takes, but it's as buggy as most bethsoft games get.
Not sure if you've actually played the game, but I haven't encountered any of that "hacking or cheating" so many outlets seem to be reporting on. (well over 20 hours in)

Fallout 76 is a low effort cash grab pile of trash rife with glitches and hackers thanks to no QC or anticheat from bethesda.
