There are reasons some people might want to grind the beans the night before. Noise early in the morning being one. You still have the option to grind beans right before whenever you like, you're not giving that up. The Technivorm will still do a really good job temp and time wise with those ground the night before beans. You could also lose flavor if you're not roasting your own special beans, but not everyone does that either. Or have the perfect grind with a better quality bean with the correct water to coffee ratio. These are well built long lasting appliances. I've owned one for years with no problems. I sometimes will grind the beans the night before, use crap coffee, use the best possible coffee ground right before, use coffee I helped process from picking to roasting. Closing the drip off, letting the filter fill and stirring to infuse grinds or not. With and without a smart switch. It all works. You can still use it to brew freshly ground coffee for your guests after they drank too much wine with dinner.

Generally, cars are also driven at times other than rush hour. Even high end sports cars.

Does this have a timer setting? My Bonavita doesn't and it drives me crazy. I also can't use the Bonavita with a smart switch because the Bonavita has a spring in the switch so it never stays in the "fully on" position a smart switch requires.

Can this be used with a smart switch?

I actually just checked it, should work fine with the smart switch. I mostly do pour over these days and haven't used it in awhile so I couldn't remember. I guess I should add that mine is 7-8 years old but I don't think they've changed the design.
