The US Supreme Court in June ruled that states have the authority to require businesses to collect online sales tax on purchases even if the business does not have a physical presence in the state. So the state in which this company resides may have a law on its books requiring collection. Online sales tax will spread everywhere before long because there's so much money to be made. Blame it on Amazon, whose lobbyists pressed HARD for this outcome since they have a physical presence in nearly every state and wanted to crush small business competitors.
