Why was the New York Times free subscription thread closed after 9 hours but still on the front page?

I am trying to comment on the NYT free 6 month subscription thread https://slickdeals.net/f/12446095-6-months-of-new-york-times-digital-subscription-free-new-subscribers-only but it is closed without reason. The thread is still on the front page though.
Why was it closed but still on the front page? There is no documentation on why it was closed.

But probably because anything that's posted that's even slightly political usually degrades into a bunch of people getting offended and/or calling others names instead of being able to talk like adults, so the threads usually get locked.
