I lived in southern Thailand for a year. Phuket not great but Koh Phi Phi is amazing. It's a 1 hour boat ride from Phuket. Krabi is just ok. Regardless this deal is amazingingly cheap

If you have a layover up to 72 hours and you have a US passport, you don't need a visa. When you get to China, you just fill out a form at the airpory.

This would be near the end of their good season to go. After that it gets very rainy and is their monsoon season.
You can leave the airport and remain in China visa free for between 3 and 6 days.
