This is an absolutely smokin' deal! (pun fully intended)

These were $899 originally at Costco AND come with the cold smoker box and a cover and a fold-out stainless steel shelf. Just the basic smoker itself (without cold smoker box, shelf, and cover) sells for $899 currently on the Louisiana Grills web site. If you bought all the components individually they would easily cost you over $1300 or $1400.

We own this smoker (purchased on sale at $599.99 at Costco) and love it. Very good build quality. Comes in 2 boxes.

Item #1500153

After reading the hardcore forums, I'm glad I got one. Many are getting rid of their other ones, including Traegers, GM, etc. after buying the LG. From what I can tell, you're not going to be able to beat this for the price.
Which forums??

WSM is one of the best charcoal smokers out there (excluding offset and UDS), I would think a 22" would suffice, but I guess it depends on what you're cooking and how frequently

I don't really think temp swings matter that much, unless they're gigantic. Offsets have pretty large swings and you get some of the best BBQ out there. Pellet grills need temp swings to produce enough smoke.

You should be able to reduce temp swings by preheating the grill on max temp for about 45 mins, if that's an issues
I have the 18" WSM, which just wasn't really big enough. I did like it quite a bit, though, for the most part. It holds temp very well.

However, your last statement about preheating the grill for 45 mins is a good example of why I like this LG pellet grill even better. It's easier to get a cook started and there's less to fiddle with throughout the smoke. I can pretty much just fire it up and within 15-20 minutes or so be ready to smoke. The WSM took at least mins.

I'm not bashing the WSM - it's an excellent product. And while I never thought I'd say I'm a pellet smoker convert...I think I'm turning into one.

Try a google search... but here's one (it's for a different model, but it's effectively the same unit)

Okay, thanks. I didn't know if you were referring to a specific site (i.e. hardcore bbq or something) or were speaking in generalities.

FWIW my dad has a LG900. Over the summer the pellet box caught fire and he had to replace half of the grill. I know they sent him a new temp controller and a few other pieces but it took a number of emails and calling them out on twitter and facebook a few times before he got a response. He bought his as an upgrade to a Traeger which had it's own set of problems. From what I've seen, even with the so-so customer service from LG, I would still go with that over the Traeger.

My brother still uses a Traeger and he's always complaining about the hopper getting jammed, temperature swings, and not being able to keep a high temp. His pork shoulder and brisket still turn out great, and the brisket from dad's LG900 might be the best I've ever had, so I wouldn't hesitate to buy either, even with the inherent problems.

How the heck did his pellet hopper catch fire?

I've read that if you don't clean out the feeder/augur/hopper area now and again, dust from the pellets can accumulate along the path and could possibly catch fire from the heating element all the way back into the hopper area. Seems like a pretty rare thing, but it's definitely a thing.

Two probes - one for grill and one for meat. You can set and monitor both on the controller. No WiFi or Bluetooth built in. The controller is designed to maintain the grill temp within 5 degrees +/- of your grill temp set point and also can automatically reduce the grill heat once the meat probe hits your meat set point.

That's true, however with the lg900 there is a pellet drop feed into the fire so it's quite surprising that a grill with this mechanism could have that happen.

That's what scares me about this unit. There are several amazon reviews claiming the same thing. However, this is an amazing deal.

Yeah it's a great deal I picked one up for 450 and am holding while I decide if I'm gonna keep it or not. I'm leaning toward keeping it though.

Bit more than I'd like to pay, but a good discount on this specific grill / smoker.

Bought one in North Austin, and the store had one more out on the shelves (not sure if there are more in the back). It rang up at $499.97. I asked the manager to see if the other Costco's in the area had it at the $399 price, and she said they had the lowest price for the area.
