Fun fact: if it weren't for the millions of dollars spent by the likes of Intuit and H&R Block, filing taxes would almost certainly be much simpler, easier to do, and free.

I would avoid TaxAct. I was suckered in by a low price a few years ago and was deeply disappointed. I found the interface to be poor, the help section even worse, and was left with serious doubts about my taxes.

I was so concerned, I ran my taxes through the H&R Block interface the same year and found that my tax liability with TaxAct were higher. It could be the way TA considered deductions or my answers to TA's confusing phrasing of questions (I used to do accounting professionally - not taxes though), but I cannot recommend against TA strenuously enough.
Same here, used them for many years. I'm looking at these sale prices wondering where is the sale?
You just start a return now through the link. This locks the price. You do not pay until you file. If a better deal comes along, you can start a new return and lock in that price. You can start many returns, but you will only pay on the one you complete and file. I make sure to re-name the return right with the total price and level (premier 38) so that I can easily reference.

I see that too, hang tight while I try to figure this out. That definitely was not the case when I first posted.

For basic+ I'm seeing the state at $19.95.

One good thing about Illinois is a simple state return can be e-filed free on the state website so really a non-issue for most Illinois filers.

Hey guys, it seems to be working again. It could have been a temporary glitch on their end.

I used them for years and they were always reasonable. The price usually ran around $50. The last 2 years the total charge ended up being over a hundred dollars - and I don't have complicated taxes. Just be sure you know what you're getting. There are probably hidden costs.

What is the deal with these guys? I used them for many years, always one of the lowest prices, lock in Slickdeal etc. Last year was like $75 bucks? I would even lock in ~$40, because all of my info is already with them, but not sure they can be trusted now.

I signed up for a deal in December that's called "All inclusive" and it was for $10 but wont charge me until I file. I still can't find info on what that package will include. Does anyone else know what the "all inclusive" is? It was this deal.. https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/438688

Tried this once and felt they put me in a lot of uncomfortable decisions I was not sure how to answer. It would be ok for a very simple return.

So how do you lock in the price if you aren't filing now? It sucks that their rates have gone up so much the last couple of years...but ease of not having to learn a new system and re-enter all of my crap in again is worth the little bit extra IMO!
