First, this isn't a SD, these are the normal prices with a fake "markdown". Second,
I preordered a 3 plus, and have been using it since Mid December. I'm battling an ongoing issue where once the box has been off for a few days it does not respond at all to pushing the power button on the remote. I have to unplug it and plug it back in to reboot it. Customer service hasn't been helpful, and stopped responding to me until I got cranky with them for ignoring me. Also the box doesn't seem any faster than the skystream one which I also have. Their standard remote doesn't work with their own Netflix app. Their excuse is that you need their air mouse, which costs extra, this was also the case with skystream one, so clearly they don't care that you can't use it unless you pay extra for an air mouse. Also I don't believe their box is not a Netflix approved device so you won't be able to stream 4K on it from Netflix. Also their media updater thing that installs kodi has been removed and has to be downloaded from the App Store. Which they didn't tell anyone anywhere and I only found out by contacting them. Kodi is the only reason to buy a skystream, and I will say they have been good about keeping the skystream one kodi updated. No fuss (usually) kodi is the only reason I use these.
This does not appear to be an 'Android TV' box. It is a TV box running Android. This is why it needs an air mouse for things. The OS was made for touch screen devices. 'Android TV' is a version of Android made to be used with a remote and with special versions of apps made for it. As such, this box is NOT a competitor to the Shield, which does run Android TV.
Other things to consider:
The shield and other 'Android TV' boxes and TVs do not get the full Google Play Store. They only get a version with the subset of apps that will run on Android TV. You can however sideload apps and/or get access to the full Play Store.
The SkyStream and other Android boxes for plugging into TVs, DO have full Android and access to the normal Play Store. I have not tried, but you should be able to get Android TV versions of apps to sideload on them to take better advantage of a remote.
I also read in the FAQ on the Skystream site that the version on Android cannot be upgraded. Obviously if they can be rooted then you can do whatever, but it doesn't sound like they plan on updating these. Nvidia has updated the Shield to every major version of Android TV since it was released.
