I bought this bike last year and I'm content with it. I would buy it again. I used to only own Trek bikes, and it rides the same for much less money.
So tempted to jump on the Avalanche. People dump on Suntour forks because they are standard on these kinds of dept store bikes, but you get a fork with 100mm travel and lockout, plus hydro disc brakes, and decent mid-tier components for $500 bucks. Biggest downer for me is the 3x9 gearing. Great deal though.

edit: somebody s going to jump in here and claim there are used CL deals for similar spec'ed bikes that are better for the same price. They are rare, at least in my area.

For $500 look at the Diamondback Hook. It has a 1x8 and 120 mm fork. I don't think it has lockout though.

If you plan on doing any "real" mountain biking, this is a highly regarded budget bike and is 25% off:

https://www.dickssportinggoods.co...clrdcmpprf

Has 1x11 drivetrain and 27.5+ tires

thread:
https://forums.mtbr.com/27-5/nish...92087.html

Seems it was on sale at $350 at one time! But at $599 one sale now, I think it's really good value for the money...would be hard to beat imho.

A lockout on a mountain bike allows it to be used around time which easily pays for itself so that's my only requirement. However, if you only plan on using it on trails, this is fine.
