I'm not in for it...
If you aren't paying attention and let it auto - renew I agree with you...

From that linked Reddit thread:

"Converting your code Redeeming your Prepaid Xbox Live Gold 3 Month code will automatically convert to 1 month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and will be added to your current Xbox Game Pass Ultimate account."

Have you seen evidence of 3:2 conversion for 3 month codes?
Just posts on Resetera from people stating it was 3:2 for 3 months.

1. Another user in this thread stated that they were able to cancel their GPU and revert back to Gold because they didn't want the uncertainty of Game Pass not improving.

2. Think about this logically, when someone's GPU runs out due to having re-occurring billing turned off. Does it make sense for Microsoft to force you to only be able to continue using your account by paying the GPU price? We don't know for sure, like you said, but more thank likely, no. Regardless, of you saying there's no way for me to definitively know other than what an Xbox rep has stated, there's no inverse either.
Articles have stated they want to pursue multiple tiers.
Assuming they want to keep xbl and xgp as seperate 'tiers', I don't see why you wouldn't be able to downgrade your subscription.
I can understand not allowing you to drop your tier from high to low until the higher tier runs out, but that shouldn't be a problem to implement in the system.

I'm just wondering if they'll change the current xbl/xgp subscriptions and this is a way to get people off grandfathered user agreements.

WTF!?!? What do you mean no way to go back?

Doesn't make sense that upgrading to ultimate means you can never have vanilla again. It would be like upgrading to a Sam's Club Plus membership but being told you can never have the regular one again.

Got it. I am leaning towards the Redditor since it looks like they have copied directly from what the website informed them when they entered the code.

1. I was that user, and I wasn't able to revert. I had to chat up Microsoft and tell them there was a billing issue.

2. I have a 15 year XBL streak that I don't want to lapse because I couldn't switch back to Gold before my Ultimate ends. Might not seem like a big deal to you, but it's a big deal to a lot of people.

The website says this:

All conversions to Ultimate are final: Once converted, you cannot re-convert your Ultimate membership back to a previous membership.
For what it's worth I don't think there's a streak anymore. My gold has expired a few times and I still show as 15. I think it's cumulative time now.

The only thing I can confirm (Because I tried it) is that if you buy Ultimate for $1, have everything converted over, then cancel Ultimate, you don't get your previous Gold time back. It shows that your XBL Gold is cancelled and your Ultimate is cancelled.

My Xbox Live Gold expires on 01/09/2021
My Xbox Game Pass expires on 08/31/2021

It said 36 months max which would mean 06/09/2022, but my combined time on Gold and Pass are higher than 3 years. Should I not merge this then?

So if I have live until 10/2019 and Game Pass until 12/2020, what is the end result?

So if I buy this, will I get gold too? for a dollar?
For one month - best to stack up on Xbox Gold Subscriptions (up to 3 years) to get maximum value for this deal

After converted to Ultimate, there's no way back to regular Gold... So it's not a matter of auto-renew, but to pay $180/year or lost your subscription.

Nope, wasn't at 36 months. Conversion for live gold to ultimate is 24 months = 8 months ultimate
Seems like their conversion calculators are messed up on the back end then and is treating anything a year or more incorrectly.
Probably some developer with a typo in code.
subLength * 1 / 3 instead of subLength * 2 / 3.

At this point, I'm still not sold on xgpu unless there's a PC component in the near future.

1. But you were able to revert though after you mentioned that issue right?

2. I stand corrected then, I apologize for wasting your time. Also, that is a big deal to me however, you don't think they they would count the years of Gold you've had after the conversion to GPU? Since it technically includes Gold? If they don't then that's pretty dumb.
