IIRC the 1TB Fusion drive only has a 16gb SSD, the 2TB one has 128GB and is miles better.

It depends on your use, Memory on the Apple 27" 5K 2017 model is very easy to upgrade, it has memory upgrade access panel above the power supply. For myself, 1TB fusion drive is way more than enough.

Correction, the 2TB drives have 128GB of SSD within it. NOT 256GB in case anyone else was wondering.

I work in data recovery. They are recoverable but now you have two points of failure. a crappy ssd and what used to be a seagate 3tb which is the worst drive ever manufactured. You also need both for recovery. If either fail don't let apple touch it until a recovery lab can look at it. They tend to overwrite things.

Mine failed after almost 5 years (the Seagate drive did). With Time Machine backups I wasn't worried. My extended warranty paid for Apple to replace that drive. They returned the iMac to me with the OS installed just on the SSD portion, the new HDD was in there and unused. Good thing it's easy to find tutorials online on how to build the Fusion drive again because I didn't want to wait for them to fix it or come back another day and haul a 27" iMac around the mall. Restored the data from Time Machine overnight and it was like it never happened.

Other than that, the computer has been very reliable. It's a late 2012 iMac and still going strong.

On the newer iMacs you want 2TB or 3TB Fusion, not 1TB. Because on the 1TB I think it only has a 24GB SSD instead of the 128GB like the larger models or the original ones with Fusion (mine was the first model with Fusion available).

That's on the 21" 4K model... 1TB Fusion = 24GB of SSD, all of the 27" 5K Fusions have 128GB of SSD.

Edit, I'm wrong.

Since there seems to be some confusion here on this, here's the official breakdown on the Fusion Drive capacities direct from Apple on the 2017 (and also the 2019) 27" iMac 5K models...

Quote :
The 1TB Fusion Drive pairs a 1TB hard drive with 32GB of fast SSD — enough to store important macOS files and applications to ensure fast startup, near instant wake from sleep, and quick application launching, with room left over for your most frequently used files and apps. The 2TB and 3TB Fusion Drives pair a larger hard drive with 128GB of fast SSD storage, providing even more space for your most frequently used files.
