If you have a smartphone with data, things should be even more of a breeze. One of the things I didn't do was eat at more local eateries because I don't know Japanese, I didn't want to point to something at random and get a pig butt
It's quite easy in the bigger cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto etc. It's fairly easy in other tourist areas as well. Japan is getting pretty englishified for Olympics 2020.
